Our model

How investment becomes lasting change

Five stages, each one the condition for the next. Nothing here is aspirational framing — it is the sequence the work actually follows in the field.

Stage one

Inputs

  • Funding
  • Technical expertise in meliponiculture
  • Community partnerships — the Toledo Alcalde Association and the University of Belize

Partnership comes first. Village outreach in Toledo runs through the Alcalde system; without it there is no route into a community.

Stage two

Activities

  • Beetender recruitment and training
  • Hive installation and colony management
  • Business and financial literacy education
  • Process manuals in Q’eqchi’, and in audio

Training materials exist in audio so that literacy is never the barrier to learning the work.

Stage three

Outputs

  • Women trained in hive management and in business
  • Hives established and producing
  • Ancillary businesses started
  • Operational knowledge recorded in the languages the women speak
Stage four

Outcomes

  • Increased and diversified household income
  • Women working together across family lines
  • Enhanced leadership and agency
  • A Maya practice revived rather than recorded
  • Better pollination for native plants and neighbouring farms

Why the second outcome is listed as an outcome

Many of the women Komonil works with are severely isolated. Custom restricts speaking with men outside the family; feuds and gossip restrict speaking with women outside it. Komonil has lost team members who would not work alongside someone else.

Getting a group to function as a group took two years. Every economic result on this page depends on it, which is why it is named here rather than treated as a pleasant side-effect.

Stage five

Long-term impact

Resilient local economies

Income that does not require leaving the village, in a district where that is the usual alternative.

Stronger community governance

Women with standing in decisions that were made without them.

Cultural heritage carried forward

A living practice with people under forty in it — not an archive.

Better pollinator habitat

On working farms, which is where most of the range of these bees actually is.
